Katie,

You're trying too hard.  Look at the word, look at its parts.

<Dev> is a verb meaning "lead, guide"

the suffix <-wI'> nominalizes a verb as "one who does the action."

Thus, <DevwI'> is a "leader" and that's all you have to do.

How much weight you choose to put on the word "is he just the person showing us 
the way to the canned spinach in aisle 12 of the supermarket" or "is he the 
person guiding our species to a brave new era of galactic domination" is up to 
you.
