Before the dawn arrived, the girls woke up and put on their clothes. They
reported to their father. He gave them new knives and new betleth. "Always
keep these with you," he said. Father had told the truth. During the day he
yelled at them. They ran, they fought, read a book on military strategy, then
ran and fought again. Father would not permit them to rest. They quickly
obeyed their father, but he never was pleased. His daughters couldn't satisfy
him. "Do it again," he kept saying.

When the sun went down, he permitted them to rest. Outside, they made a camp.
They were too tired to eat. Their father gave them thin robes and because
the night was cold, they froze. Father left them alone. The girls talked to
each other under the stars. Pelora said, "My whole body hurts." "Mine, too,"
said Velka, "but our pain will make us powerful." "Do you think that father
dislikes us because we want to be warriors?" asked Pelora. "No, he certainly
loves us. You need to trust father," Velqa reminded Pelora. They drew closer
together in the night air and slept.

Each day was exactly like the other. The year seemed to go by slowly. The
father said to his daughters, "You have knowledge of a warrior's life. I am
proud because you have acted honorably. Well done. Now you must show the
commandant of the military academy what you know. Today you can rest because
I will visit the commandant.

Velka's and Pelora's father traveled to the capitol city. He went to the
military academy and spoke to the commandant. "My daughters are ready to be
admitted to your school to become warriors. The commandant smiled and said,
"No woman has studied here." "I know, but they have enough knowledge.
Question them and my daughters will fight any cadets that you choose." The
commandant thought that the girls will never accomplish the tasks he would
give them. With insincerity he said, "I agree." "Tomorrow I will bring
them," replied their father.
