A more apt logical comparison is to say that "Holland" is to the
"Netherlands" as "Carolina" is to the "United States". Both Holland and
Carolina are regions of the greater nation. Just as an American not from
North or South Carolina would object to being called a Carolinian,
likewise it is appropriate for a Netherlander to not care to be said of
as being from Holland. (As Wouter mentions, Nord and Suid Holland are
provinces(translation?)--in the same sense N and S Carolina are states.)
(Of course, the word "Dutch" really gets things messy, but Wouter
probably will agree the Netherlanders are so used to it, that it's not as
objectionable as calling the nation "Holland". And gee, then there is
the acronymic "Benelux".... Ouch! Pays-bas anyone?)
I continue this discussion only to apply it back to *Klingon* habits.
Note how "Earther" is used as a term of derision to describe Federation
citizens.... If you understand the cut issued by a Klingon calling a
human and "Earther", you can understand the cut issued by someone calling
Netherlands "Holland".
