I am reminded of the story of Kahless and Motak. Motak had come to
Kahless to be trained as a great warrior. Kahless began teaching him the
ways of honour. Motak ignored his studies in honour and only begged to
have more weapons training. Kahless told Motak that a warrior must start
from the beginning and that even if a warrior without honour should win a
fight, it is an empty victory and the battle has already been lost. Yet
Motak continued to refuse to learn and practice the basic techniques of
combat and pushed Kahless to teach him techniques above his level. One
day there came news to Kahless of a great beast that terrorized the
people of Tra'kest. When Kahless had gathered a group of his best
warriors to hunt the beast, he learned that Motak had heard the news and
had stole away on his own. The boy believed that his will to win would
be enough to beat the beast, but when he got there, the beast quickly
taught him that he did not even know how to properly swing a sword.
After Kahless had defeated the beast, he stood over the corpse of Motak
and said, "His training was lengthy. It was possible that he could find
the heart of the beast, but he refused to learn how one perfectly holds a
weapon. Motak died in order that we learn. Victory and/or honour belong
not to the fool which does not perfectly train."
